Additional Spreader Bar Info:
- Sterling Tackle Bars can be trolled from flat lines, outriggers, high positions, or even way, way, way back. The bar will skip across the surface and occasionally duck under a wave, only to break out and spray the lures across the surface. It is this repeated action that make spreader bars the "deadliest" lure in the northeast.
- Internal cigar floats improve tracking and allow the bar to remain floating while fighting a fish on another line. Sometimes the floating bar will even hook up while stopped.
- 18" bars should be fished with tackle of 20# class and higher (These are excellent light tackle bars, troll very nicely from outriggers and way, way, way back)
- 36" bars should be fished with tackle from 30# class to 80# class
- Spreader bars work best when trolled 4-8 knots
- The "spring" in the bar is critical for increased action of outside lures. Typical oversized 1/8" stainless steel bars do not have the "spring" effect and create excess water drag.
General Trolling Tips:
- "Match the hatch", your lures should be similar in size to the bait in the area. Sometimes 5 inch lures work best in the canyons.
- When you discover the “hot” color for the day, switch over as much of your spread as possible to a similar color and presentation. (increases multiple hook ups)
- When you hook up on the troll, keep going for 15-20 seconds, (increases multiple hook ups) then slow down, clear lines and fight the fish.
